Signs of the times: 2011 Chicago Mayoral

Signs don't vote

The 2011 Chicago municipal elections - the first in the post-Daley era - offered plenty of intrigue and some cool yard signs.

- Rahm Emanuel's sign was noteworthy in its being the first I've seen which asks folks to "Text RAHM".  Carol Moseley Braun, Miguel Del Valle and City Clerk candidate Susana Mendoza all had website addresses.

- Moseley Braun was the only one with her ballot punch #. Everyone likes the star: Gery Chico, Del Valle, Emanuel and Mendoza used the 6-pointed Chicago flag star, Moseley Braun had a swooshie star. Lotsa red-white-and-blue.

- Del Valle's was the only sign indicating it was produced by a minority-owned business; every sign had a union bug (hey, this is Chicago!)

- Each sign had a slightly different voice and message: two signs flat-out said  "Rahm for Mayor" (first-name is all you need to know) and  "Del Valle for Mayor". "Carol" is "For Chicago", and "Working Families" are for "Gery Chico" (first and last name).

- The coolest image is the Chicago skyline/Obama-ey letter "O" in Mendoza.

But remember the old precinct captains' adage: signs don't vote.
